{"id":1153010,"date":"2026-01-29T00:11:46","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T19:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.app.com.pk\/?p=1153010"},"modified":"2026-01-29T00:11:46","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T19:11:46","slug":"peace-oxford-childrens-word-of-year-for-2025-says-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/demo.app.com.pk\/index.php\/2026\/01\/29\/peace-oxford-childrens-word-of-year-for-2025-says-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Peace: Oxford Children\u2019s Word of Year for 2025, says study"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">ISLAMABAD, Jan 28 (APP):Peace is Oxford Children\u2019s Word of the Year for 2025 according to research by Oxford University Press (OUP) as 35 percent of children chose peace, narrowly followed by a third (33 per cent) choosing AI and 21 percent opting for resilience.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The research, which was carried out in 2025 and surveyed opinions from almost 5,000 children across the UK aged 6\u201314, highlighted children\u2019s awareness of current affairs, said a press release.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">One in ten children mentioned \u2018war\u2019 when asked why they chose peace and highlighted specific conflicts such as \u2018Ukraine\u2019 and \u2018Gaza\u2019.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Words such as \u2018need\u2019, \u2018want\u2019, \u2018should\u2019 were frequently mentioned in their answers when calling for peace across the world.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">A study of the Oxford Children\u2019s Corpus, the world\u2019s largest database of writing by and for children in the English language containing over half a billion words, reveals mentions of peace in children\u2019s stories submitted to the BBC 500 Words competition has increased by 60 per cent since 2015.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the second consecutive year, AI was selected as runner-up, and when asked why they chose the word a fifth of children (20 per cent) mentioned \u2018hearing\u2019 and \u2018talking\u2019 about AI highlighting its ubiquitousness in daily life.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like last year, when asked how the word made them feel children gave positive responses with more than one in ten using the adjective \u2018excited\u2019 or \u2018exciting\u2019. More than a quarter of six- to eight-year-olds (29%) chose AI as their word of the year, demonstrating how even very young children are aware of the every-day role AI plays.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Almost half (47 per cent) of children chose six-seven as their slang word of the year, followed by aura (24 per cent) and delulu (7 per cent). Research revealed that the use of six-seven among children fosters inclusivity and social currency, with almost one in ten mentioning \u2018friends\u2019 when asked how they use the term and \u2018popular\u2019 was frequently mentioned in reference to what six-seven meant to them along with more than one in four (28 per cent) citing \u2018fun\u2019 and \u2018laugh\u2019.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">While more than one in ten (12%) of children admitted six-seven had no meaning, most children highlighted the value of such words, with 72 per cent of children stating it was important to have words they only use with friends.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">OUP is calling for schools to participate in the next Oxford Children\u2019s Word of the Year to further support children\u2019s reading, vocabulary development and oracy skills.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Schools are encouraged to hold \u2018word of the year\u2019 conversations throughout the school year and vote for their word choice for 2026. OUP has developed an accompanying activity pack with tips and resources for taking part, including how the sessions can encourage book talk and language development. More details on how schools can download the pack and get involved can be found here.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">To mark the announcement, and to support the National Year of Reading 2026, OUP will be collaborating with the National Literacy Trust on school events across the UK. The author-led events will encourage children to engage with different forms of reading and reflect on the words they read, hear, speak and learn about.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Andrea Quincey, Director of Early Years and Primary Publishing, Oxford University Press, said: \u201cA key theme we see from our Oxford Children\u2019s Word of the Year research is just how attuned children are to current affairs. This year is no different; whether that\u2019s calling for peace in response to current conflicts or highlighting how AI has permeated daily life.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Perhaps it\u2019s no surprise that \u2018six-seven\u2019 is voted, overwhelmingly, as their slang word of the year.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">A word which brings them laughter and joy and connection with friends. We see how important it is for children to have agency over their language away from the grown-up world and share words that adults can\u2019t understand.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFor this reason, we are calling for schools to get involved with our Oxford Children\u2019s Word of the Year research for 2026. Not only do we want to hear from more children, but we also want to hear about colloquial words and capture regional voices. This year\u2019s research demonstrates just how important it is that we continue to research children\u2019s language and support their vocabulary development as it plays a vital role in their self-expression.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jonathan Douglas CBE, Chief Executive of the National Literacy Trust, said: \u201cLanguage plays a profound role in shaping our society, culture and identity. Understanding how children and young people make sense of the words they encounter in their daily lives, take ownership of them and play with their meaning, demonstrates the power of language for helping us comprehend the world around us and our place in it.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe National Year of Reading will enable us to give more children and young people new opportunities to experience language in ways that are fun, relevant and help them connect with others.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Throughout the year, we will work with Oxford University Press and several incredible authors to bring the magic of reading and words to life for children and young people across the UK.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">For more than a decade, experts and academic researchers at OUP have been tracking Children\u2019s Word of the Year, analysing the evolution of children\u2019s language and how it is used to reflect their emotions and experiences.
