{"id":1151765,"date":"2026-01-27T12:53:29","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T07:53:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.app.com.pk\/?p=1151765"},"modified":"2026-01-27T12:53:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T07:53:29","slug":"un-chief-warns-law-of-the-jungle-is-replacing-rule-of-law-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/demo.app.com.pk\/index.php\/2026\/01\/27\/un-chief-warns-law-of-the-jungle-is-replacing-rule-of-law-2\/","title":{"rendered":"UN chief warns &#8216;law of the jungle&#8217; is replacing rule of law"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>UNITED NATIONS, Jan 27 (APP):UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the global order is eroding as the rule of law gives way to what he called &#8220;the law of the jungle&#8221;, as he urged\u00a0 world powers to recommit to international law as the foundation of peace, justice and multilateral cooperation.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He was addressing a high-level open debate of the UN Security Council convened by Somalia, which holds the Council presidency for January.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The discussion comes as conflicts multiply, global tensions rise, and confidence in international institutions and rules is fading \u2013 even as the UN marks 80 years since the adoption of its founding Charter, which set out principles meant to prevent wars and reduce suffering.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe rule of law is a cornerstone of global peace and security,\u201d Guterres said, calling it \u201cthe beating heart\u201d of the UN Charter.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>For eight decades, he said, the Charter, alongside the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Geneva Conventions and other core legal instruments, has helped humanity avoid another world war and limit the toll of countless conflicts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>But the Secretary-General warned that commitments to international law are increasingly being ignored.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cAround the world, the rule of law is being replaced by the law of the jungle,\u201d he said, pointing to what he described as flagrant violations of the UN Charter and international law, including the illegal use of force, attacks on civilian infrastructure, human rights abuses and the denial of life-saving humanitarian aid.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>From Gaza to Ukraine and beyond, he said, the rule of law is being treated as \u201can \u00e0 la carte menu,\u201d with States choosing which rules to follow. Such violations, he warned, set dangerous precedents, encourage impunity and erode trust among nations.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>For smaller and less-powerful countries, particularly those affected by historical inequities and the legacies of colonialism, international law is \u201ca lifeline promising equal treatment, sovereignty, dignity and justice,\u201d Guterres said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cFor powerful countries, it is a guardrail defining what is acceptable \u2013 and what is not, in times of disagreement, division and outright conflict,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He underscored the unique responsibility of the Security Council, the only body with Charter-mandated authority to adopt decisions binding on all Member States and to authorize the use of force under international law.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIts responsibility is singular. Its obligation is universal,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Looking ahead, the UN chief outlined three priority areas for action.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>First, he urged countries to honour the commitments they made under the Charter, including settling disputes peacefully, safeguarding human rights and respecting the sovereign equality of States.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Second, he called for the use of peaceful tools to settle disputes \u2013 negotiation, mediation and judicial settlement, alongside stronger partnerships with regional organizations \u2013 and more investment in development to address the root causes of inequality and exclusion.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Third, he stressed the need for fair, independent judicial proceedings.
